Just so we're clear...
DEADLY CHEMICAL WEAPON:
THE ONLY THING THAT CAN SAVE US:
I guess I'll have to blow up the plane with my explosive lotion next time. Curse you, TSA!!
ANYWAY, I flew down to Florida this afternoon, and have done nothing productive since yesterday. (I guess I did my taxes and some retouching, but I've barely drawn.) I got a nasty papercut on my bristol board. I got a frappucino, and when I got to my gate, there was brown stuff on my finger. I thought my frappucino was leaking, but it turned out that it was my finger. >_< I thumbnailed a few panels while I waited (I hate choreographing fight scenes.) I probably should'be thumbnailed more while I was on the plane, but I decided to fight giant 8-eyed flying manta rays instead.
Anyway, since I hate to post without talking about comics, I'll blog about
Becky's blog, who's blogging about
Corey Lewis' blog. Basically, it all about how comics should be serialized monthly instead of the current trend of OGNs. The problem, in my opinion, with monthly comics is that they're too damn expensive. Monthly comics are usually around $3 an issue. The comic industry is a niche market, and there's a large crowd of people who buy them as collectibles. The thing is, your copy of Captain America #25 isn't going to be worth a lot of money in 30 years, because everybody's going to keep their 5 copies in near-mint condition. Old comics are worth so much because it's rare to find a near-mint condition copy of Action Comics #1 or whatever. They were disposable entertainment. They still should be. Why would I spend $12 on a 4-book monthly series, when the trade is going to be $10, and have extras?
I would love to see a low-price monthly anthology, but the industry doesn't seem to be going that way. Shoujo Beat is $5.99 an issue. I assume that Shonen Jump is about the same. But nobody seems to want to try it with original comics in American. There's an interview with Kurt Hassler on
Newsarama (which I haven't read yet, 'cause I'm lazy), about Yen Press. They're going to be publishing a monthly anthology, containing translated Japanese comics, and original American comics. I'm hoping that if things go well with Yen Press, other companies might try following suit.
As a creator, I would love to get my comics out to people every month. (But then again, I'm not published, and I'm slow as fuck, so who am I to talk?) On the other hand, I don't think OGNs are necessarily a bad thing, either. After all, comics are books, and prose novels don't come out on monthly, one chapter at a time, schedule. I'm kind of torn on the subject.
And finally, it's supposed to rain most of the time I'm in Florida (except for the three days I'm going to Disney World, woo!). Kinda blows. Stupid weather.
