She looks across their cells and into the eyes of the pale-faced clown. She's never seen him this sad. "You really have it bad for her, don't you?" The halls are empty; her voice rings in the asylum where only they remain. The others broke out earlier, but they didn't help them. They don't trust her because of her relationship, such as it is, with the Bat, and they've all always known better than to trust the Joker.
He slips back into the shadows as he dabs at a lone tear trailing down his ugly face. "About as bad as you've got it for the great, big, bad Bat," he snaps back irritably.
Selina just sighs, her hips and legs twitching slightly as would her tail if she had one. "You've got it bad." Her admission is as much on her as it is on him, but she no longer cares about hiding her feelings for Batman. They've been through too much not to admit that they have . . . something, but what is that something? What do they really have? What can they have when every time he sees her, he locks her up?
Her sly smile falls into a pout, and she's about to lay back down on her cot and play with the ball of yarn the idiot guards failed to take off of her during her last booking when a new explosion rattles the bars of their cells. She flips back up alert and is surprised to see Joker smiling as widely and brightly as the sunlight pouring in to the asylum pass the smoke rising from the new hole in the wall.
"Hmph. She actually came for him."
"You came!"
"Did you really doubt me, Mistah J?"
"I doubted you could get the job done, Harley, but I knew you'd try." She beams as he kisses her forehead. He grabs the bazooka off of the nearest goon, then looks back over at Catwoman. "You coming, Cat?"
She wants out. She wants to get back with her babies, but she's set up a plan for them all. Onyx knew who to go to when she was arrested again. They will be well taken care of, and if she leaves now, in the end, it will only result in her being arrested again. There has to be something better in this world, something better for her and her babies, something better for her and the Bat.
"Come on, Mistah J! We've gotta run! The pigs are coming!"
"Let 'em come, Harley. Gotham's going to bleed red tonight. Catwoman?"
Finally, Selina shakes her masked face. "No. No, I'm going to sit this one out." She sees the surprise in his face, but she lays back down without hesitation. She knows she's making the right move. Partnering with the Joker would've only gotten her stabbed in the back, or worse.
"Catwoman."
She lets the yarn fall from her agile hands as she jumps up at the new voice, the one for which she's been waiting all this time, and every time before. "Batman?"
"Selina, I . . . I need your help."
She smiles. "You have me," she answers, purring, and the truth of her words rings throughout the bare asylum and the bright daylight waiting outside.
The End
