He stares at her, so damn placid, and Skye’s skin crawls. She knows she’s being used as a bargaining chip by Coulson, and she knows it’s necessary. Give Ward what he wants, a little face-time with her, get some Intel in return.
That doesn’t mean she isn’t sick to her stomach at the sight of him.
Skye liked him, and she hates herself for that. She knows he had them all fooled, that people who have been specifically trained to sniff out double-agents couldn’t see through Ward’s façade. But she still remembers his smile, his touch, the way he could be gentle with her, soft compared to how he was with everybody else.
She liked him, and that’s the worst part. Being tricked like that, it means she’s lost a little faith in her own instincts, and she’s not sure she’ll ever get it back. It doesn’t matter if she’s the one who broke his cover, because any second she was under his spell was a second too long.
She liked him, and Ward liked her, he really did. He still likes her, wants her near, has been sat down here in his cage hoping for a chance to see her. Because the way he likes her, it’s twisted, same as every other part of him. He’s warped and fractured, like a reflection of a real person in a broken mirror, and she’s not even sure he gets that.
She liked him, and he can’t accept that it’s over now. There’s never going to be anything in Skye’s heart for him but hatred and anger and betrayal, but there’s still hope in Ward’s eyes. He’s a criminal, a prisoner, but he acts like he’s just biding his time. He shows her the scars on his wrists like he’s trying to prove that he’s human, that he has emotions. Like he’s testing her, looking for sympathy.
Skye liked him, and she’s scared of what that means.
He’s scum, but she liked him. Maybe there’s something wrong with her. Maybe she’s always going to be drawn to the wrong people. Maybe the next guy she likes will turn out to be a monster as well.
But for now, she can make sure Ward never hurts another person, she can wring any useful information she can from him, and she can tell herself that that’s enough.
