Summary: Phil and Pepper bond after he has returned from the dead.
"Oh man, "My Way". I love this song, it always makes me think of simpler times." Phil Coulson remarked as Pepper Potts popped a CD into the stereo. Gently the sounds of Sinatra poured over the apartment as she poured two large glasses of white wine. She carried the wine glasses over to where Phil sat on the couch, still proper and dressed in a suit despite the informal gathering.
"Of course you do. You always did like old things."
Taking a seat next to him they sat for a moment in comfortable silence, "Never thought we'd get a moment like this again, Phil. I thought you were dead."
He smiled brittlely, "Well I was dead. It's amazing what they can do with science these days." He took a large drought of wine.
Pepper knew that look on his face all too well, the look that said that he was purposefully hiding things from her. She didn't press the issue- for now, "Who knows you are back from the dead?"
"Officially? No one."
"So it's just me then?" She looked surprised and pleased, "I'm honored that you chose me of all people."
Phil smiled, "It just wouldn't be the same without a few friends at my back who aren't on SHIELD's payroll."
Pepper kicked off her shoes as Coulson's phone rang. "Bosses really suck," she remarked.
"Makes it easier when you aren't dating yours." Phil retorted, picking up his phone. He nodded into the speaker, "Yes sir. Sir? I'm kind of in the middle of something." Angry yelling was heard coming from the other end of the line, "Call it a personal day then, just this once." Softer tones were heard, "Got it!" Phil smiled, "Understood, sir."
Phil closed his phone, "Managed to get the night off."
"Barely back from the dead and they still give you a hard time about taking time off?"
Phil shrugged, "The fate of the world is at hand all the time it seems. Someone has to take on that burden and it might as well be me since I know a thing or two about oddities."
Pepper nodded grimly, "Some things never change. No matter the nearly world ending tragedy it's always you that gets called in to fix the problems."
"Why fix the system if it's not broken?"
"You never get tired of getting told what to do and never calling the shots yourself?"
Phil shook his head, "I wouldn't want to be in charge- too much publicity. Besides if I was in charge I could never take any days off to drink for the night with my friend. What about you?"
"What about me?"
"You ever wish to be the boss?"
Pepper shook her head, "I'm content to let Tony's ego speak for both of us. I'm better behind the scenes anyway."
She raised a glass to toast, "Here's to still being friends, even if we still aren't our own bosses."
"I'll drink to that." Phil said, and they both drank deeply.
