Diagnosing Eating Disorders Through Hair Samples

Dec 16, 2007 13:09

Researchers at BYU have just discovered a new way to diagnose individuals with an eating disorder - hair samples. http://newsnet.byu.edu/story.cfm/66767

By looking at an individuals hair and examining the levels of nitrogen and
carbon in the hair strands, researchers were able to accurately assess, in 80% of cases, whether or not the person had an eating disorder.

This is a huge step forward in the fight to correctly identify and treat individuals with eating disorders. Without having to rely on a person's willingness to be honest about their eating habits or those who claim a "fast metabolism", doctors have a new tool in their disposal.

The message here is that the human body does not lie. At its most cellular level, the body will tell the REAL story.

I find this fact incredibly reassuring. I may be able to cover up what I'm doing to the outside world, but my body will betray me.

That fact alone will end up saving many, many lives.
