well I can give you *my* understanding of it, which is likely to be a bad reflection on my fellow canadians.. lol, the guy I work with the politic-watcher. I just complain about them.

there are several political parties, the two *main* ones are the Liberals and ... these days they call themselves... urg I think they're back to Conservatives (they merged with an western group a few years back and reflected it in the name, hence my technical confusion. the reality of their policies wasn't improved by the merger so Conservatives is pretty much what they've stayed in my mind)

there is also the Bloc Quebecois: Quebec is a province. which bills itself as french. even though I assure you we have (I was born there though I don't currently live there) plenty of english. they just happen to also know friench. anyhow, quebecer radicals have been whining and shouting over the heads of the sane people that they want to seperate (they've lost every referendum, but sometimes only by 0.5%...). anyhow. the political party that 'speaks' for the radicals in the Bloc. and they have a federal arm.

and (I totally forgot this one when I first wrote this! sigh) the NDP

there is also a green party, which I believe finally got a seat (1 representant was elected)

and there are assorted other fringe groups ((eg) if your other canadian flisters are in those.. I might just get wapped for using that term.. but anyway)

so. each party has a leader, elected by the members of the party.

when there are federal elections, you vote for the local represenative that you want to send to the legislature -and here is where I use the word fringe groups, because they do not have reps in all ridings-.

at the end of the night, all reps are counted, and the party with the most reps wins and its party leader, becomes Prime Minister -I do think recall is an added requirement that the leader have won his riding before he can continue either as leader or as prime minister-.

ridings are not of equal size, people or territory wise.
canadian population is not remotely evenly spread out

now political platforms, I can only tell you my mental representation. I don't bother keeping up with the specific lies they are trying to pass at any given time.

Conservatives: "Women's rights? yeah, whatever." "Of course my wife and I are part of church groups." "Marriage is a sacred institution, defined by God. *They* have no business in it" Pro-life. The liberal are lying conniving sneaking 'businessmen' (never mind the one that sued the government for 2 million dollars after he got out of office... oh no, the *liberals* are the cheats). and then of course the current one is Bush's a**licker -no backbone and a bleedin' shame to have as a representative to the world-

Liberals: wishy washy on most topics. but at least there have been a few who had *character* for crying out loud! Gimee Trudeau and Chretien ANY damned day. (weird coincidence that both told off their american counterparts in their time, eh? lol)

NDP: the polical arm of the Unions. need I say more? usually end up jacking debt up. I suppose they are seen as friendly to the little guy.

Green party is obvious

Ohhhh, tasty, tasty info....Thank you, it all makes a lot more sense now.

You sound like you're not very impressed by anyone. There's one thing we have in common - they're all idiots here, too. XD

you have a very cool LJ layout! :)

hey, far 's I'm concerned they're all equally paid-off lying *politicians* (and that's a far worse epitath than 'american' ;p)

If I had my way I'd vote green just on the theory that they at least agree that there is a problem. but that means one less vote for theliberals which means the bloody religious right gets in and I will not allow my vote to be a part of that problem. so I vote liberal.

lol, the only one of your I remember kinda liking the idea of was Perot!

and then of course, if lady clinton wins. and if General Hillier were to go politician here... (VEG) there'd be a people's militario in charge of canada and a woman in charge of the states.... isn't that a hillarious idea?? rotflol

Thank you! I like to keep it simple. :D

Clinton...ugh, she's the least impressive of all the candidates. I am a feminist, but I'm not going to vote for a the woman just for the sake of having a woman president. She's pretty incompetent.

Obama...I like him. He's the best compromise.

McCain is just another one of Bush's a**lickers.
