Why I Wish I Could Be Republican

Jan 20, 2009 07:09

In my experience, as limited as that is, Democrats are full of shit.  Well, that is to say, all politicians are full of shit to some extent, but Democrats mostly.  The agendas they come up with and try to pass are overly idealistic, sophomoric, and inane at best.  This is why I wish I could be a Republican.  Sadly, the Republican party has forgotten what it used to stand for and unless, by some miracle, the current party returns to their traditional values, I will never be a part of it.

The core values of the traditional republican party were very simple:  small national government, open markets, individual liberties.  But how can a party stand for individual liberties and tell two men that they don't have the right to express their love?  How can a party stand for open markets and continue to perpetuate corporate bailouts that soar our national debt to ever-increasing heights? How can a party stand for small national government when they enact laws such as the Patriot Act that extend the power of the government to dangerous levels?  The Republican party is one that has lost it's way.  They have gone from being smart, well-spoken advocates of traditional values, to outspoken bigots spewing hatred and loathing for more than 60% of our nation's population.

Why is this the case?  Does anybody know?  When did the party decide that quasi-religious stances were more important than the basic values of liberty and equality?  How did this party go from being the party of Lincoln to the party of Bush?  Maybe we will never know, but I do know one thing:  until this party changes, independent is where I stand.

republican, politics, democrat
