So here I am, the first presidential election I can vote in, and who am I voting for?
For a long time I had supported Barack Obama. His commitment to real change and powerful, if sometimes redundant, speeches have me real hope for new politics. Then he chose Joe Biden...not a good move and not reassuring to me. This on top of his somewhat arbitrary switches between policies prompted me to look at the candidates once more.
So I looked at John McCain and at first I was surprised. John McCain and I lined up on some very important issues, more than I expected, but at the same time were fundamentally opposed on some other issues, which I expected. I began considering endorsing John McCain, as it seemed we agreed more than disagreed on key issues, until that fateful day. John McCain chose Sarah Palin as his VP, and any hope of my vote went swiftly out the door.
Then I decided to swallow my pride and look at the Third Parties. I knew that the Green Party was right out, we simply didn't fundamentally agree on too many levels, but there was the Libertarian Party, which seemed to match me to a T. As a fiscal conservative and social liberal it was hard to choose either party as one whould oppose half of my mind either way, which is not the case with the Libertarian Party; they too are socially liberal and fiscally conservative. So Ilooked into their candidate Bob Barr. We did disagree on a few key issues, but overall I found myself either totally agreeing or feeling alright with an abundant amount of his policies. Along with that, the issues I disagreed on were not particularly improtant to me in the first place.
So now I have arrived at my decision. As of this point, I am officially voting for Bob Barr for president, sicne it seems like less of a waste than a mainstream candidate. If you want more information of this position, feel free to comment!
