Creative Project

Today I had a creative project due for my education course about adolescents. We had to find newspaper articles which talked about teens, and analyze it in relation to a course reading. And of course we had to do something 'creative' as well.

I chose an article that dealt with similar issues in the novel Monster by Walter Dean Myers. So the focus of my project is around race and gender in addition to adolescence.

I decided to make a painting. I based this portrait on the cover of the book Monster.

I had to include an explanation of the piece in my written analysis, so I'll just include that paragraph here:

For my creative piece, I wanted to create an art piece, much like how Steve [the character of the novel] envisioned his trial and experiences in jail as a film. I decided to paint a portrait of a young, Black male. It is a face-on view, just like a mug shot and I overlaid it with chicken wire. In a literal sense the chicken wire represents a barricade, like a jail cell or fence. Metaphorically, it symbolizes two other things. The first is the stereotypes of race, gender and age that may victimize an individual and make them feel trapped. The second is that these stereotypes and assumptions prevent us from being able to see others as they truly are- we fail to see the humanity of others and instead, reduce them to ‘monsters’.

So far, this course is probably one of my favourites this term. Our prof is super funny and nice. In today's class, all we did was watch Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle, since we're discussing issues of race right now.

Yesterday, my first intaglio project was due and we had a critique in class. My prof had some positive comments for me, so hopefully that means I did well. I'll post pictures when I get the project back.

On Saturday I'll probably have to go downtown because I have an art gallery review due next week.. I'm such a homebody, and never really do anything on the weekends just for the fun of it.. but I guess I don't mind going downtown.. even though it would be better if it wasn't so cold. I want winter to be over.
