Most of this month's update

May 23, 2005 02:20

RAVISHED by the crash of the messageboard I usually type this up at I've decided to use this as my weekly updating source. This is what I can piece together from the last three weeks:

Brain Death "Personal Affair" (Selfish) absolute impulse buy from Circledelic. $40. This is one of the things I've been telling myself I wanted for a really long time, to the point where even though I don't really listen to this kind of music (Napalm Death inspired ultracore ragery) regularly, it's still just something that bugged me that I didn't have. I mean, the record's good and all, but $40, yeesh...

Career Suicide "Signals" (Slasher) First payoff from the Slasher Records club. I've seen this band before, and kinda felt lukewarm about the experience, but I honestly tried to appreciate this record and got nowhere. 9/10 early 80's revival hc bands are really in one ear and out the other with me, and Career Suicide was never an exception for me. Nice packaging layout, though.

Fucked Up "Generation" (Slasher, w/ first press stamp)Another piece of Slasher Records club payola. I've officially decided I like the version of "Generation" that's on the CD better than this one. The fadeout is kind of a killjoy. Am I wrong for wondering how many of the first press were stamped? 'Cause I got an unstamped first pressing when they played down here, which means that not all the first pressings were stamped...Yeah, I do take time out of my day to think about stuff like this.

Stalin "[Japanese title]" b/w "No Fun" (Climax) Traded for an Ill Repute "Land of No Toilets" ep and the 1st Funeral Oration 7". An alternate version of one of my favorite tracks off "Stop Jap" and an awesome reworking of a Stooges jam in a great picture sleeve. I will never get tired of hearing minute long punk songs isolated on one side of a 45.

Sledgehammer "Your Arsonist" (Specimen 32, red viny, acetate sleeve #'d/30) Goddamn, how is this not bad? This borders on being really good actually. I'm gonna say that after listening to this 7" a few times today that it's better than "To Die For," which I haven't heard in awhile, so I'm not commiting to this. I really hope people know what the deal is with this band, 'cause the cover certainly doesn't sell itself (It's just that dude with the top hat and glasses with a mallet bihind his back, the character you see on the side of exterminator's cars all the time). I'm really glad this was pressed to vinyl, though, 'cause it wouldhave taken me forever to crack and buy this on CD.

V/A "By The Fruits You Shall Know The Ruits" 3xLP (Time Lag/Eclipse records, with six organs of admittance, Jack Rose, The MV/EE Medicine Show, Dredd Foole, Fursaxa, and Joshua & Kemialliset Ystavat) Alright, this stuff is officially over my head. I've heard a lot of these bands be referred to as "neo-folk," but a lot of this stuff just sounds like a less-memorable version of the stuff that was on those John Cale Dream Syndicate CDs. Disected on a case-by-case basis: Six Organs of Admittance, man, I saw these guys open for Golden Dawn (!!!), and it was one of the lamest most pretentious experiences of my life. Dimed down lights, weak ass delay pedal loops, attempts at guitar skronkery that fell WAY short of ballistic...When I relayed my experience to people their jaws dropped: "WHAT, YOU DIDN'T LIKE THEM? It must have been an off night, 'cause thier records are GREAT!" Brother does their side on here prove that wrong. straight up meandering tinkering of various instruments culminating in a snoozefest of a sub-Waits monotone accoustic song. Jack Rose does two guitar composition pieces with lots of texture and layering that showcases a lot of talent, but seriously, who fuckin' cares. Open chord droning, wow, alright, put this out in 1971 when it would have still been somewhat relevant. The MV/EE Medicine Show song didn't stick out in my head, which should tell you something right there, but it's a pretty aimless soundscape piece with the saving grace of it sounding like it was recorded on a chincy tape recorder, so it kinda has a "raw" feel, for whatever that's worth. The Dredd Foole stuff, jeeeesus...Lemme tell ya', sometimes there's a very fine line between stupid and brilliant...Not here, this is just stupid. Some dude making noises with his mouth into a microphone for fifteen minutes, and then whispering "goodnight, my dear, goodnight" over an accoustic guitar riff. I really don't understand what the appeal of this is outside of seeing if you can get a bunch of jerks to listen to it and see how many of them will take it seriously. The last LP is at least a little better. Joshua & Kemialliset Ystavat play six or so songs with very different approaches and instruments in each one, none of which are particularly obnoxious. The Fursaxa song is a side long piece that evolves and changes, with different instruments coming in and out and flowing seemlessly part-to-part. A lot of the bands on here try doing this kind of sound, but these guys are actually focused and create something that manages to keep the listeners attention. So why'd I end up buying this $30 piece of froo-froo if I'm obviously not into most of these bands and don't really know enough about the music they're playing to appreciate it one way or another? Two words: EBAY GOLD! Deal with it.

Amenity-"s/t" (Vinyl Communications, test press) traded for a Boris "Akuna No Uta" Venom ripoff picdisc. Best San Diego band ever, so no regrets.

Bad Brains "Soul Music For Bad People" (mumboclaat) Decent live bootleg. Kind of a throw-in from a bigger trade.

Bad Brains "House of Suffering" one sided ep (SST) Flex says "for completists only." German's aren't ALWAYS crazy. Cost around $10 from the bay.

Battered Citizens "Rolling With The Punches" (Overkill) Played this a few times, but can't quite remember what is sounded like. Awesome white people tagging cover.

Boston X "s/t" (FNS/Str8ntrue) A super big deal is made over the fact that no one knows who's in this band. The fact that I've talked to a few Boston heads who honestly didn't know either kind of impressed me. The insert ALSO makes a big deal about how the members are all in "well known" edge bands, which is fucking silly, and that the record is "limited to 300 copies ever and only to be given away." Yes, they are trying waaaay too fucking hard to be "kvlt," but whatever. Came "free" with Hammer Bros. preorder.

Double-O "s/t" (Dischord/R&B 0) Traded for a White Cross 7" since I rarely listened to that White Cross and legitimately enjoy this Double-O 7." Call me crazy, but some of these jams kinda remind me of Stalin 'cause of the echoey feedback droning guitar and the approach to drumming.

Bad Brains "Pay to Cum" b/w "Stay Close To Me" (Bad Brains Records, 2nd press, stamp on the dust jacket, "masterdisc" in matrix) With a hefty paypal cache still in tact I dropped $100 on this...Well, $140, but I haggled with the dude to send me back $40 'cuse of a fucked up crack in the vinyl, which doesn't really affect play on the A-side, but causes a skip in the b-side. I'm really terrified of the crack getting worse, but fuck it, that's what I get for impetuously buying on e-bay. Oh, and hearing "Pay To Cum" in its isolated state like this is a damn near spitirtual experience if you remotely care about hardcore. "Stay Close To Me" shows how above the competition BB were in '80...I mean, who the hell else in that 1st wave of USHC could pull off doo-wop harmonies.

Champion "Live At The Arthouse" (Bridge 9) Hey man, say what you will, but pre-order B9 stuff has never done me wrong with rinky dink trade fodder.

Face Value "Coming of Age" (Conversion, clear) had this record on tape since I was 15 or 16 or something. I don't know why it took me so long to get it on vinyl, 'cause it's as fully essential as the Confront 7" (which you can take any way you like).

Hammer Bros. "II" (FNS, silkscreened cover, blue vinyl)
Hammer Bros. "II" (FNS, yellow vinyl) Utterly unessential impulse preorder. Lines like "how can you keep your self respect when you can't even close your fuckin' legs" are as perplexing as the black and white MS paint cover art.

Middle Class "Out of Vogue" (Joke Records, 1st press w/ gray labels) Took me a bit to get this, namely a Brainbombs 12" tour pressing, a Corrupted/Noothgrush test pressing, and a Sunn demos 2xlp. "Situations" is also a better cut that "Out of Vogue," by the way.

Miles Away "s/t" (Bridge 9, one sided promo) Hey man, say what you will, but pre-order B9 stuff has never done me wrong with rinky dink trade fodder.

Outburst "Miles To Go" (Blackout) Another notch on the Don Fury belt and a fine addition to any "hardcore records with tagging" collection. Traded for a SBV test pressing (relax, there was 50 of 'em).

Some Girls "The DNA Will Have Its Say" (31g, pink) Haven't really had the chance to listen to it. Few "play it in the background" spins prove it to be at least up to par with the previous 7"s. Godly drumming and nice thematic packaging.

Token Entry "Ready Or Not...Here We Come!" (bootleg) $5 from Richard Ramos. The more I listen to this the more I wanna drop the big Gs on an original pressing. This sound like it could be on Mystic Records, but a bizarro world Mystic that actually puts out records you can listen to for more than a few years.

10"s

Pale Cocoon "[japanese title]" ([Japanese label]) 10" Weirdo "soundcollage" stuff from Japan that ends up kind of reminding me of Residents the first few times I listened to it...Which ISN'T a good things. Perhaps repeat listens will reveal more, but as it stands this is just "over my head music" that'll get filed and forgotten. Got this from ebay for about $10.

Chiko Hige "Killer Wood" (Telegraph)10" The insert says that this dude played drums in Friction. This record has 4 instrumental "pieces" consisting of any combination of organ, drums, saxaphones, and probably some other stuff I'm not picking up. Awesome lockgroove drumbeat stuff with improvised jamming presumably played live and recorded really raw, which lends A LOT to the recording. $10 from ebay with no regrets.

12"s

Acid Bath "When The Kite String Pops" 2xLP (Rotten Records)
Me: Yeah, I impulsively bought that Acid Bath 2xLP at the record store today.
Matt: Is that any good?
Me: well, I like it, but I can see you fucking HATING it.
Matt: Why?
Me: Well, it doesn't really sound LIKE Alice in Chains, but if you wanted to make fun of 'em you could definately use the "making fun of Alice In Chains" voice.
Matt: Oh, man..
Me: Yeah, the part of me that likes Starkweather is in love with this.

Bad Brains "I And I Survive" (Bad Brains Records/Import) Different versions of 4 songs on "Rock For Light," which sound fucking GREAT. Hearing Destroy Babylon-->Coptic Times-->Joshua's song played kinda slower and with a more prominant drum mix than the "Rock For Light" versions is a real experience. "I And I Survive" sounds fucking perfect too, all isolated on one side of a 12" on 45 and I think I detect another guitar track. Cost around $15 on the bay.

Bad Brains "Live" (SST) perfect mix of early material and "I Against I" stuff. I swear it sounds like Roger Merit is singing on "Coptic Times." $5 from Ramos.

Black Flag "In My Head" (SST, no barcode) Hearing a Flag record with Rollins' voice so low in the mix is kind of disorienting. Regardless, the harmonies on "It's All Up To You" and everything about "Crazy Girl" are top notch. Someone please time travel back to my adolescence and eliminate every jerk who ever said later Flag stuff sucked so I could have been listening to this stuff WAY earlier, okay?

Converge "When Forever Comes Crashing Down" (Equal Vision)
Converge "Jane Doe" 2x12" (EVR)
Converge "Petitioning An Empty Sky" (EVR) Traded these all for their respective CD versions. Best part is I'm still not sure whether I even like this band or not...

Negative Approach "Demos, Live and Unreleased 1981-'83" (Reptillian) Slept on getting this at first, but I figure I ought to pick it up before it goes out of print and I feel like a real jackass. I dunno, I don't really feel my life is that much more enriched owning this. I'm sure people who think "Tied Down" is over produced are stoked, though.

Pagan Babies "Next" (Hawker) I haven't really sat down with this record, but damned if it doesn't have a real California vibe mixed with the "goofier" side of NYHC like Murphy's Law or something. You're saying Doggy Style, perhaps? Well, maybe, but this is actually good, or better yet okay. Another more-or-less throw in record

Poison Idea "Kings of Punk" (Pusmort, w/ "Portland edition" poster, newsprint poster, and T-shirt ad) Traded for that new Boris 2xLP on black. My poster-less copy is supposedly going towards a Tokyo Rockers comp. RAGIIIIIIING!

Redemption 87 "s/t" (New Age, clear) Fuck man, how many times does this happen to me? I get to the point where I can completely write off a not very good band I only kind of like, get rid of their record, and then for whatever reason I get the bug to check them out again, and I track down their record only to be reminded of why I was lukewarm on it in the first place. At least I only gave up a repress of Token Entry's "Jaybird" for this.

Ringworm "The Promise" (Incision, orange wax) Got this and about 12 lesser value 7"s for a Crippled Youth 7" I "restoked" within the week. I wanted this record for fucking EVER, but I didn't want to submit to ebay, and I won. VICTORY!

Haxan "s/t" (Youth Attack, #'d/120 in the matrix) after passing on the Weakling 12" when it came out and seeing the retarded cash it fetches these days, I learned my lesson: don't pass on limitied black metal stuff if you have the chance, even if it's likely to be considered a joke by most black metal types. Hey, is it okay to say this stuff sounds A LOT like Gehenna when played on 33? Is it okay if I admit that I really don't know if it's supposed to be played on 33 or 45?
