Kyuhyun braced himself on the wall and watched the man approach.

He stepped over the salt circle.

The holy water made him pause only to shake it off of his face.

The shotgun was too far away, and his knife was wedged in the boards when he’d been thrown by the demon he’d been fighting minutes before. He’d been too busy unscrambling his brains to see what this newcomer had done.

He had a stick, a pointy stick. No one knew the pains it took them to get shotguns off the black market, or the amount of time he’d had to spend getting himself and Siwon out of trouble for having them. And he was stuck with a stick.

His last defense, another vial of holy water, was caught and tossed away. And he’d never seen a demon strong enough to just disregard it out of hand. That was why demons were demons, and holy water was, well. Holy.

“Who are you?” Kyuhyun demanded, and wondered where the hell Siwon was. “What are you?”

“I am not a demon, Kyuhyun,” the man said. “My name is Zhou Mi.”

He found it hard to breathe, when he saw Zhou Mi’s wings.

“I don’t know if we should trust him,” he’d told Siwon once.

If Zhou Mi was out for himself, or some special breed of demon, or maybe he’d found something that boosted his stats a little. Siwon had been more inclined to believe Zhou Mi was the real deal, and that bugged Kyuhyun a lot. They had to trust each other, and he relied on Siwon more almost than he did any of their weapons, but a brand new person out of nowhere, without even a word or an invitation was something else. A person who popped in and out without notice. He’d woken to Zhou Mi on his bed one day, curiously examining the the hotel alarm clock, and making Kyuhyun shout in horror.

“It’s only me,” Zhou Mi told him, and Kyuhyun wondered again if this angel had been pressed into a model’s body. Zhou Mi’s face, wending between serene and determined. The soft fabric of his clothes.

But Siwon hadn’t missed the way that Zhou Mi appeared - when Kyuhyun called for him.

“It’s like you have some kind of special bond,” Siwon had said, and Kyuhyun had tried to fight the urge to punch the smug expression off his face.

Maybe Zhou Mi wasn’t too well versed in humanity, but watching him figure things out, his frustration with the people they met, his sadness at the depravity, kind of touched something in Kyuhyun that he hadn’t had reason to examine in a while. He’d gotten so used to putting his head down, and getting through the day. Killing this demon, or that monster, escaping that officer of the law. They walked away a lot of times without thanks, but they usually left the cities they passed a little safer. They had their good times, eating together, or even just researching on their way. Siwon filled in the gaps, and took it twice as hard at times. The morality of it, the sacrifices. Things Kyuhyun had sworn he’d never lose sight of, but sometimes, he had to make the choice no one wanted to.

And when he looked into Zhou Mi’s eyes, he saw those choices. He didn’t find absolution there, or judgement.

When he watched the corners of Zhou Mi’s lips tug, baring his teeth in a smile.

He wondered what happiness meant to an angel, and why that smile was directed at him.

“Zhou Mi, you there?” Kyuhyun choked out, the air heavy with smoke and fumes. Siwon was close, hurt, and Kyuhyun could barely see him, and when Kyuhyun turned his head, he nearly took Zhou Mi’s nose off.

“What’s wrong?” Zhou Mi asked.

“There are kids,” Kyuhyun said, staggering to his feet. “They were collecting them to eat-“

“Get Siwon outside. I’ll help them,” Zhou Mi said.

And Kyuhyun turned without thinking, without questioning. Hauling Siwon up, and half carrying him toward the outside. Dark, but clean air that he gulped. Scum dispatched, they’d set a fire before Kyuhyun had taken the last one out. If they couldn’t eat the kids, then the kids weren’t living either.

“I’m okay,” Siwon said. “Help Zhou Mi.”

But before he could do more than start back inside, Zhou Mi appeared with three coughing, crying children.

“This is all of them,” Zhou Mi said seriously, and let Kyuhyun help him set them down. With a gentle hand to each of their foreheads, Zhou Mi looked up at him, and that tentative smile on his face.

“They’ll be fine, Kyuhyun. You can stop worrying.”

They saved as many people as they could. But that night, more nights than he could admit, Zhou Mi was the reason they saved as many as they did.

Even as they drove away, carefully staying close until police and paramedics arrived, he thought hard on that. And when Siwon’s leg was fixed up, he spent time in his bed wondering what it all meant. He knew Zhou Mi was what he said he was. Long fingers that touched Kyuhyun’s hand, and spoke of mysteries, and stared at him, confused.

And he wondered how long it would be until Zhou Mi was no longer there, until he got bored of his human playthings. It’d be status quo again, him and Siwon, and the help they got along the way.

It scared him.

It scared him most the times he looked at himself in the mirror, and touched Zhou Mi’s handprint on his shoulder. It was a link he couldn’t erase, even if he tried. Maybe he should’ve wanted to, but he didn’t.

“What are you?” Kyuhyun asked him again, and he didn’t think Zhou Mi would have a different answer.

“I’m here, Kyuhyun,” Zhou Mi told him, and his arms gathered Kyuhyun in. Not the hug of family, or of a partner, or of people they made their family along the way. It was different, and it was more.

Zhou Mi was strong, and Zhou Mi was very weak. In that way, in ways he hadn’t expected, he found they were the same.
