(for the record, yes, I am reading these, even if I don't always reply - I usually check LJ in the morning, which doesn't leave me much time. but I do read.)
I remember, way back when I lived in VT, doing a bit of debate with you on the whole nature-vs-nurture thing. you had the point that nature BY nurture was probably more accurate, and that really sounds like what you're talking about here.
on one hand, I completely see what this means, where you're coming from, and I totally agree with you. hell, I can trace back a lot of my own issues to growing up, and in particular when my parents got divorced. it's like those posters that show a black kid and a white kid hugging and smiling, and above them it says "nobody's born a bigot." who you are really does go back to how you were raised; those early years are called "formative" for a reason.
on the other hand, I don't know if you really think this way or if it's just how this rant came out, but it seems like you're only seeing this as a negative. yeah, we're all screwed up by our parents, and we'll all screw up our kids. so it goes. but I know that, because of how I was raised, that's why I have a good work ethic, why I stick to my word, and why I follow through when I say I'll do something. in my house, there was no "X is better than Y," no "[person] is one way or another because he/she is [race]," which is why I'm not racist. when my mom went back to work, my dad never made it an issue, which is why I don't think of women and men as having to be in old-fashioned roles. and all this put together is why I'm such a strong believer in equal rights and everyone getting the same treatment, no matter who they are.
and yes, this is all despite me being raised on country music, though I do blame that for making me a hopeless romantic. *grin*
besides... if being raised how you were has made you into the person you are, if it's given you that fire in your belly and that driving desire to fight for what's right, then it can't have been completely bad. there are too many who are too content to sit on their asses and wait for the world to change. I'm glad you're not like that.
