Thinking derby thoughts, etc.

I miss bartending. I really miss it. The more product I sold, the more money (tips) I made. I got used to the instant gratification of having money every day. Unfortunately, the last time I tried to get a bartending job in January, I learned that most places worth working had already hired en masse to prepare for the holidays. However every year Churchill Downs is ridiculously understaffed for bartenders and will hire hundreds just for the week. Maybe this year, now that I live nowhere near Louisville, I'll actually get to enjoy some of the Thunder/Derby festivities. I didn't go to Churchill Downs to work last year because I was already scheduled  to work at the redneck bar. Damn my misplaced loyalties. But since nothing significant happens in Evansville in May, taking the week off shouldn't be a big problem.

I'm thinking about going out to a bar and asking for empty bottles, that way I can practice my pours and remember how to make certain drinks. I asked one of my bartender friends about how to learn flair bartending. Apparently there are specific, plastic, heavy bottles you use to learn to flip and toss before you actually move onto using the real glass bottles in the bar. Maybe I should take up juggling first, to hone my hand-eye coordination. Beanbags and bouncy balls are likely much cheaper than practice flair equipment and it would probably be a less painful way to see if I can commit to practicing something I might stink at doing before I invest in specialty equipment. We'll see.
