the world seems calm to me tonight
as I gaze out my living room window
the clock taunts my sleepy eyes with 12:13
and my dog is obsessively licking her paws
trying to soothe her eager
instincts to run and dig
the man standing outside my window
shifting his weight from time to time
breath rising from his nostrils
we stand, enjoying the silence
the sky's inviting glow is rare tonight
the moon handing out light to restless stars
and homeless clouds that cover the nightime metropolis
no encouragement comes from the man outside
for I am warm and sad with unreceiving eyes
and he is cold and running short on time
so we stand in silence contemplating our futures
both trying to hide the wild urge to run off
into the night and never speak anymore
we are simply trying to hide our breath
for we are only mortal and always in need
life pushing us farther away
and there is nothing we can do
but accept our weakness and
sit silently, patiently
for the world to end
for the cold to end
