Big thanks to my beta, VanishingP2000 over on fanfiction.net! And I still own jak. I only write this disclaimer about half the time, but it always applies. I just don't feel like stating the obvious all the time.
Security Systems
Colby knew that he looked like night of the living dead as he all but stumbled up the stairs of his apartment building, but he was really too tired and too sore to care. Most of his neighbors knew that he worked for the FBI and therefore tended to come in at all hours looking rather disheveled, so they paid little attention to it. Except for the UCLA student that had just moved in next door and who sent him a rather shocked look as he trudged up to his apartment door looking like he had gotten into the bar fight of the year. The kid just stood in his doorway, laptop bag in hand and stared as Colby entered his apartment and shut the door behind him, giving no sign that he had noticed the kid, though he was somewhat amused by his reaction. It was always fun when someone new moved in.
He dropped his bag inside the door and his coat on top of it, not really caring about anything other than crawling into bed and sleeping for a very long time. He stripped down to his boxers, leaving a trail of clothes behind him worthy of a mad sex dash and literally fell into bed, glad that he hadn’t made his bed before he had left for work… two days ago? Or was it three? He decided that it didn’t really matter as he buried himself into his pillow and was almost asleep when his phone rang shrilly next to his ear, causing him to wince. So help him God, if it wasn’t one of his teammates telling him that one of them was either dead or dying or there was a major terrorist attack in the Los Angeles area, he was going to kill whoever was on the other end of the phone. Even if it was his own mother. Well, maybe not his mother. But his Aunts were fair game.
“What?!” he snapped into the phone and his expression and mood only darkened as a cheerfully oblivious voice came on the other end.
“Hello, Mr. Granger, this is Mike from ADT Home Security and I was wondering if you would be interested in purchasing a security system for your home?”
“No, I am not interested in your product. I already have a security system: It’s called a gun!” Colby snarled, hanging up the phone and chucking it across the room. Anyone who really needed to get a hold of him had his cell number, anyway. He smiled slightly into his pillow, satisfied that ADT would not be calling him again.
