A few days ago I discovered at least 5 kittens in the chicken coop in my backyard. A friend at work said he wanted to get a kitten and I said he could have one of them. Today, I go back there with a live trap and set about catching one of them and the lady that lives across the alley wants to know what I'm doing.

I tell her I'm going to catch some kittens. She wants to know which one. "Whichever one climbs in the trap." (by this time, I'm looking at her oddly because Whiskey Tango Foxtrot business is it of her's what I'm doing in my yard?)

She then tells me that I can't, because they are her granddaughter's pets. "They're wild." Well yes, but they belong to her granddaughter because she feeds them. I stare at her, imagining in a year I'll have 30 cats in my backyard because they are feeding the cute kittens... and next year they'll have be having babies.

She wants to know if I live around here. I tell her it's my yard and then she wants to know if I'm responsible for mowing all those weeds in the alley.

So, I walk around to the other side of the chicken coop, where she can't see me and put the trap inside, where the kittens have been sleeping. Andrew will have his kitten. About 30 minutes later, I see the little girl snooping around my yard while I'm back there and she wants to know if I'm looking for something. I tell her I'm cleaning my yard, which I was. She says, "Those black cats are mine" I tell her they are in my yard. "Well yeah, they're wild, but I feed them."

I'm trapping them and Andrew can have his pick. Next time I see the lady, I'm telling her if they want the kittens, they better take them home and make them house cats or I'll take them to the shelter. I DO NOT need a legion of feral cats in my backyard, stinking up the place.
