With Liberty and Justice For All

In honor of Inauguration Day:

Here's to the U.S. Constitution.
Here's to equal protection under the law.
Here's to emphasizing our similarities as we celebrate our differences.
Here's to building up, not tearing down.
Here's to mending fences, from across the aisle to across the pond.
Here's to using the carrot instead of the stick.
Here's to honestly acknowledging that there's work to do.
Here's to honestly acknowledging we haven't always made the best decisions.
Here's to making better decisions.
Here's to making informed decisions.
Here's to knowing that work isn't fun, even if you love it.
Here's to wading in and getting our hands dirty.
Here's to patience as we work for progress.
Here's to not giving up.
Here's to struggling toward a goal instead of just struggling.
Here's to struggling together and not alone.
Here's to the freedom to say what needs to be said.
Here's to the freedom to say what didn't need to be said.
Here's to the Democrats, the Republicans, the Independents, the Greens, the Libertarians, the single-issue voters, and the people who never vote.
Here's to the free exchange of ideas, because without that we might miss the truth.
Here's to debate and disagreement.
Here's to compromise.
Here's to listening to one another.
Here's to tolerance.
Here's to justice tempered with mercy.
Here's to happiness and hard work.
Here's to privacy.
Here's to security, in our jobs and our homes and around the world.
Here's to the Army, the Navy, the Coast Guard, the Marines, the Air Force, and the National Guard.
Here's to protesters.
Here's to the press.
Here's to asking questions.
Here's to getting answers.
Here's to a clean slate.
Here's to understanding that there's a difference between existence and living.
Here's to understanding that the difference is liberty.
Here's to the last eight years, and the hope that we may learn from our mistakes and recognize our successes.
Here's to the next four years, and the hope that that we may remember what we've learned, that we may acknowledge our shortcomings, that we may continue to live freely, unencumbered by the weight of our regrets and our failings.
Here's to the American people, and the opportunity we have to try to be happy, and the promise we have to be free.

"Liberty has been the key to our progress in the past and is the key to our progress in the future. If we can preserve liberty in all its essentials, there is no limit to the future of the American people." --Sen. Robert A. Taft
