Haru listens quietly and patiently as Gokudera tells his stories. About his father. About his mother. About his sister. And about the loneliness and alienation he felt every day of his life until he met Tsuna. She also clearly hears the undercurrent in all of it: You could never understand.
When his voice, hoarse with fatigue, finally fades off his final syllable, Haru lets the silence hang for a moment. Just as she can tell he is growing uncomfortable, she says only, "I'm glad."
He stares at her incredulously, too surprised to even splutter for words. "I'm glad," she says, "that you've told me these things. Because it means you trust me."
"That- that wasn't the-"
"-'That wasn't the point'? Then what was?" When he doesn't answer, Haru continues, smiling softly. "If you're trying to push me away like that, give up; it won't work. I've accepted that part of you just as I have accepted the you I've known all these years.
"If you're trying to prove you're no good for me, that isn't going to work either." She lays a hand over his and squeezes. "Because despite everything that's happened, you're still the only thing that makes everything else make sense."
Haru stands. She places a soft kiss to Gokudera's forehead. Then she heads for the door. "If you think of more stories, I'll be doing laundry."
