RaceFail: Once More, with Misdirection

Mar 02, 2009 08:50

For the past three weeks or so, I've been forced to contemplate deleting or locking down this livejournal because of harassment and privacy threats I've been receiving as a somewhat bizarre result of RaceFail09.

What's been going on
[quick eta - Kathryn has apparently been redirecting the pages where she outed me to some kind of spammer site that ( Read more... )

Would you prefer it if I did or didn't link to this? (Another option would be to add to the giant link post, but not put it in a new linkspam post.)

It's relevant to the Fail, and I'd like to spread your call to re-focus on the real issues. OTOH, I don't want to exacerbate the derailment or fuel any more attacks on you.

(And I know you've said you don't want sympathy or agreement, but: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH.)

No, link it. I posted because currently my privacy is hosed -- the Google search finds exactly what I didn't want it to find. So keeping silent was ... protecting Will and Kathryn from other people finding out about their behavior, but was not protecting me. I may delete, I may lock down, I may put my full name on this so that searches find the LJ instead of people calling me a hypocrite, a classist, a liar, and an all-around mean girl. I haven't decided yet.

vom_marlowe also has a recent post on this, although I don't know if she wants it linked.

(Also, thanks.)

Micole, I understand that you want to move this in a productive direction, and I don't want to undermine that, but I did want to draw your attention to this:

1) Kathryn Cramer has a Typepad blog.

2) TypePad's terms of service specifically say:

"Weblogs, posts, comments and other content (including images, audio, video, and other files uploaded to the TypePad servers) not permitted on TypePad include but are not limited to material that... (bulleted list that includes)... invades the privacy of another user by posting personal information."

3) Their Contact Form makes it very simple to lodge a formal complaint for a breach of service, simply by supplying the URL of the post in which she outs you as well as any post in which it is made clear that you did not wish to have your name linked to your LJ accountSo it is entirely possible here that you have recourse. I don't know what you want to do with that, and I want to respect your wishes, up to and including deleting this message (although you could just do that yourself, come to ( ... )

P.S. I am still buzzing about Andrea Hairston's Mindscape.

I am reading Jhumpa Lahiri's Unaccustomed Earth (short stories, fiction) which is elegant. I want to read Interpreter of Maladies next, but these aren't SciFi, which coffeeandink asked for specficially, so.

This is the list of scifi/fantasy authors of color compiled a few years ago. I'm working my way through them, but Colson Whitehead remains my absolute favorite. I also look for African-based stories, and will let you know if and when I find something wonderful.
