RaceFail: Once More, with Misdirection

Mar 02, 2009 08:50

For the past three weeks or so, I've been forced to contemplate deleting or locking down this livejournal because of harassment and privacy threats I've been receiving as a somewhat bizarre result of RaceFail09.

What's been going on
[quick eta - Kathryn has apparently been redirecting the pages where she outed me to some kind of spammer site that ( Read more... )

Would you prefer it if I did or didn't link to this? (Another option would be to add to the giant link post, but not put it in a new linkspam post.)

It's relevant to the Fail, and I'd like to spread your call to re-focus on the real issues. OTOH, I don't want to exacerbate the derailment or fuel any more attacks on you.

(And I know you've said you don't want sympathy or agreement, but: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH.)

No, link it. I posted because currently my privacy is hosed -- the Google search finds exactly what I didn't want it to find. So keeping silent was ... protecting Will and Kathryn from other people finding out about their behavior, but was not protecting me. I may delete, I may lock down, I may put my full name on this so that searches find the LJ instead of people calling me a hypocrite, a classist, a liar, and an all-around mean girl. I haven't decided yet.

vom_marlowe also has a recent post on this, although I don't know if she wants it linked.

(Also, thanks.)

Yes, thanks for asking.

I think the best part is the one person whose arguments get called bullshit when she actually cites a source in her comment.

This is-- epically spectacular in a way that I cannot even begin to textually render.

Yep. The paper Google's founders wrote describing their methodology couldn't possibly actually describe it.

I think at that point, I threw my hands up in despair.

Do you know offhand whether the CBS is continuing to sponsor the Octavia Butler scholarship? I've donated to them in the past and had considered doing so again when this discussion first started, but the website's a couple of years out of date.

I am pretty sure they are continuing the Butler scholarship. They definitely announced someone receiving it last year.

Thanks. They only had information about the 2007 scholarship up that I could see, so I thought they might have gone the way of all flesh.

Incidentally, here's my idea RE outing; we all get together and create, like, sixty-seven M. [realnames] to link to, and then link the heck out of them. There could be the M who's a professional dolphin trainer, and the M who's a Quiverfull Kansan with eighteen children, and the M who posts endless dull rants about the politics of some small town in New Hampshire. It'd be great! Who've you always wanted to be?

I'm so sorry. I've really enjoyed reading your LJ, and I really feel I've learned a lot from it. And not just about manga and stuff...

So, some people respond to racefail by creating a new press, creating new festivals and writing new work. There's been a lot of traffic on 50books, a lot of great reviews of interesting books by POC.

Other people respond by attacking a person whose reputation their petty and vindictive actions can be assured of harming?

50books has been so exciting to me. I don't have a lot of free time to read right now, but I can't wait till Thesis stops eating me so I can go over there and grab more book recs.

Yeah, me too--all I'm reading right now is thesis-related or occasionally popular nonfiction and rereads of books I've read a zillion times before. But I'm making up a booklist for next year.
