Just finished: Rimrunners by C. J. Cherryh. It's another of the Alliance/Union stories. Bet Yeager is lost and alone, but she isn't a victim: she's a 20-year veteran space marine, and when she lands on a privateering vessel in the aftermath of an ugly war, she (mostly) lands on her feet. It's a bit too obscure in the writing, I think, and leans too hard on Cherryh's fondness for broken men. Eh. I don't think I'll keep it.
Now reading: Diane Duane's Interim Errantry, a collection of three Young Wizards stories. It's fine, but the first two are seasonal stories, which don't excite me. The last one appears to be a more traditional big Wizards story, although I only just started it.
Up next: The Ladies' Paradise by Emile Zola. Or, actually, no, I'll be reading Kate Elliott's Black Wolves. So excited!

Just the kind of fic I like: Max Gladstone Dr. Flox Beelthrak
on the Great Man Theory of the Galactic Rebellion against Palpatine. Nicely done, sir.
Lovely look at dogs over the course of their lives:
Dog Years. NPR provides a list of
best-selling writers you've never heard of. This is a fascinating article about the history of food and recipes:
The Archive of Eating. I suspect Veejane may find this useful:
The Logical Fallacy Referee.
Oh, man, I do love the Toast. Here's
every comment ever left on an article about bras. In other news, over the weekend, I saw a trailer for
a new movie starring Chris Pine as a Coast Guardsman in 1952, in which he valiantly risks his life and those of his men in order to save a ship full of stranded sailors (while his girlfriend heroically wrings her hands and begs that he be ordered to return, sigh). If you care,
this is the story that the Disney movie is based on. It's pretty astonishing. (What is more astonishing is Pine's attempt at a Cape Cod accent, yikes.)

TV-wise, I'm behind on everything but Jane the Virgin. I did discover that The Great British Bake-Off is a great show to sort of watch while packing for travel or sorting books to get rid of.
My Tivo died, basically. Well, no, I switched to VOIP and broadband and it will no longer communicate with Tivo Central. It served me well, though: 14 years! And ahemming isn't a great option because my broadband goes through AT&T and is not protected unless I set up a VPN.
Speaking of television, I'm watching episode 2 of this season's Agents of Shield and OMG YOU CAN NOT CARBON-DATE SAND! WTF people. That's, like, fucking basic, people.
Where is May? And why is Hunter still important? God, so boring. More Bobbi and May kicking ass, please...
