Check out
some awesome suffragists a century ago. I'm impressed at how fashionable so many of them look. I know those clothes were probably a bear to wear & maintain, but they look fabulous.
You find some of the best writing in sports, I really think you do. Runners World profiles
Debbie Heald, who 40 years ago did something nobody had ever done before, and nobody has done since. It's probably going to break your heart. (Long Form)
I get these envelopes all the time:
Envelopes that claim to be important. Most of them seem to be about refinancing. (Boing Boing)
Woah, I had no idea
the Branch Davidians were still around. Huh. (Long Form)
There's a great discussion on MeFi
here about the old board game Diplomacy, and it's impressive how much my recollection of the game matches up with the MeFi commenters. I played with my siblings, long evenings hunched over a formica table on winter ski trips, and to this day I remember my outrage and upset at an inevitable betrayal.
What a surprise:
podcasting suffers from the same gender imbalances as a lot of other industries. (Link via MeFi) For many of the same reasons: Unless born of already-existing media outlets (i.e. resources with business plans), most start-up podcasts bring in very little (if any) money, yet demand super-human efforts to be produced regularly. Many women who I spoke with mentioned they simply couldn't afford these terms - and if they could somehow manage not getting paid for tireless devotion to a project, they couldn't squeeze those hours needed into their already personally and professionally over-burdened days.
I hadn't realized the imbalance, myself, since my regular run of podcasts is: On the Media, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, Planet Money, Stuff You Missed in History Class, Stuff Mom Never Told You, and Stuff You Should Know. Of those, two are entirely female-hosted (MomStuff & HistoryStuff), and two more have female co-hosts (OTM & PM).
One thing I suspect is that there's a high percentage of female voices among the fannish podcasts out there; one of the commenters on the article lists a bunch of BuffyVerse & other podcasts, all with women hosts. The one fannish podcast I ever subscribed to (the late lamented AsCast) was entirely populated by women, and I would guess hardly any men even subscribed to it. Women may well be dominating the non-commercial/non-traditional marketplace of podcasts, just as they do in fiction, for many of the same reasons.
It's nice to see that
the effects of the Sequester on basic science funding is getting some press. Although by "some press" read: discussed by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

We watched two episodes of Northern Exposure last night (it's my new Thursday night tv show with
laurashapiro and
danceswithwords), and Oh! It was like coming home. All the familiar faces and voices. Laura and P. have never seen the show, and the rest of us kept going ::flail:: when Chris, or Marilyn, or RuthAnn, or Ed showed up. Although I admit we were mocking all the men's high-waisted pants pretty seriously, and Joel's ridiculously baggy shirts and cardigans. Still, it's lovely to be in Cicely.
Also, watched last night's Community just now, and it... felt like classic Community. That was good.
