I had good shopping luck tonight. In pursuit of nothing in particular, I grazed the sale racks at Banana Republic and tried on a grey sweater dress (made me look lumpy and frumpy), a black twist-neck sheath (would require Spanks), and a black cowl-neck sheath. And the cowl neck was the clear winner by a wide margin (as we age, we require linings, and less stretchy material), and I was ready to buy it at the marked-down price of $109. For I do need a good black dress that can go to a business meeting or a funeral or a function. And lo! the register rang it up for $65. And thus was my shopping karma achieved.
Now I just need a holiday party that justifies the wearing of a classy black dress.

Oh,
Russell Means died. And of course George McGovern died this weekend as well. Noted for later is
Joan Walsh's piece about McGovern. Oh, and somewhere I found a link to
this story about McGovern during the war (he was a B-24 pilot), which is quite remarkable and moving. *
Looks like
Amazon's just stuck their foot in it again. They remotely wiped a woman's Kindle and deleted her account, and refuse to tell her why.
Boing Boing of course is all over this. And I was just about to order a new Paperwhite...
Mark Bittman (one of my current food gurus) has designed
a new food label.
Noted for later:
crowd management and the design of Grand Central Station. Hmm, I wasn't aware of this Anthropology in Practice blog, I shall have to subscribe to it.
Speaking of the Smithsonian,
Past Imperfect has the story of the first professional female ballonist. Cool!
Noted for later viewing:
Baby elephant rescued from a well. I've been reading David Quammen since he was a regular columnist for Outside Magazine; it's nice to see him getting some good press for his work.
Popsci has an exerpt from his new book about pandemics. Prepare to be worried...
Bad Archaeology points out that, among other problems,
the Starchild project is likely in violation of federal law.
I think I've found
a new fashion blog.

In political news, Ken Burns thinks
Mitt Romney is Mr. Potter, the grasping businessman from It's a Wonderful Life. Heh.
OH MARTIN SHEEN NO. What are you thinking? *
This weekend was for baking: I made 3 loaves of Betsy's Pumpkin Bread, 4 of Nana Parson's White Fruitcakes (with organic dried pineapple), and a two-layer carrot cake (recipe from The New Basics) with cream-cheese frosting. I'm baked out. But the fruitcakes are dosed with brandy and wrapped in waxed paper and tinfoil, sitting in a dark cabinet, and most of the cake was eaten, and one of the pumpkin breads is in the freezer. I forgot to bring one of the others into the office this morning, though, will have to do that tomorrow.
