Pro Publica (rapidly becoming one of the best sources for critical-thinking journalism around) has a
story on private contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan, inspired by new information coming out of Wikileaks.

I'd heard VS Naipaul had a new book out about Africa, and I'd seen a couple of quotes that made me uneasy. But I hadn't followed up on it, so
the quotes Jessa Crispin provides are... enlightening. [Note: warning for language about animal harm.] Reassuring to see there's been some response in the literary world.
The Title IX Blog
has some quotes from a US Dept of Education letter to school officials, which points out correctly that a lot of bullying has to do with enforcing gender norms and is therefore a Title IX issue for schools.

O, California: a dude lit up a joint at the bus stop yesterday. I was kind of O.o, but happily the bus came soon and I didn't have to smell it for long. If I'd gotten it in my hair, that would have been interesting, given the level of security at my office. Heh.
BoingBoing has
some images of a comic-strip version of Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the artist is selling the prints. Which does make me wonder: what does Lucasfilm think about that? Is it okay because they're one-offs? Or have the lawyers just not found him yet? In which case, he's going to be pretty pissed off at BoingBoing for the publicity.

One of the advantages of living in the Bay Area is that you get a greater density of weird little businesses like
this. Now I know what to do with my old CD cases! Or whatever.

I don't get to buy
jimhines (or anyone else) a beer at Wiscon this year, or be spotted doing keg stands with the GOH, more's the pity. My beloved oldest niece is graduating from college that weekend, and family obligations mean I do not get to go spend four days in Madison. I'm very happy and proud of my niece, who is a star, and it will be a fun time, but it's too bad about Wiscon.
I do however plan to attend Fogcon, so if any of y'all are coming, look me up!
