The several scientists reading me might find this post interesting; it's a report of a study about children's perceptions of scientists, before and after a visit to Fermi Lab.

It's not just the human mind. Treebeard in the LOTR movie also enjoyed going south, because it felt as if he was going downhill. ;-)

See, I've been telling people for as long as I can remember that north is whatever direction is uphill, but for some reason they don't seem to believe.

I know these things. I'm a geologist.
