omg it is very weird to overhear, in my VERY MUCH NOT GEEKY OFFICE, people talking about Firefly. Pity that the guy leading the discussion is the socially-inept one who only talks to me when he wants me to bring in baked goods...

Ravi Shankar, seriously? What the fuck. Wait, it's not that Ravi Shankar. But still, holy fucking God. How can this still be happening?

Because the only reason one would put Nnedi Okorafor and Maureen F. McHugh in a collection is to fill a quota, naturally.
I don't think it's the only reason, but I can see why someone would find it curious for a collection to feature one woman, be criticized for it, and then feature eleven women the next time. Perhaps he did consciously choose female authors over comparable male authors, but if that seems to be the only way female authors are going to be highlighted in these collections, then he should go for it. (I have no idea what the size of Jonathan Strahan's penis has to do with anything, though.)

So appalling. Esp. the whole exchange with the cop about the arrest warrant, when ANYONE would be able to see this wasn't the same guy. So awful.

So much embedded sexism in that, really. It's just so damned tired.

That's the problem. I can see his point, but I suspect we don't actually think the same way.
