RIP Rob Levin

Sep 16, 2006 18:33

I found this message sitting on my screen when I came home this afternoon:

Notice from christel ([Global Notice]
On the 12th September Rob Levin, known to
many as Freenode's lilo, was hit by a car while
riding his bike. He suffered head injuries and
passed away in hospital on the 16th. For more
information please visit #freenode-announce)

Robert Levin was the president of the PDPC, and the founder of their biggest project, the freenode IRC network. Anyone that has ever used Linux/*BSD knows how much of an asset freenode is to the Open Source community, and anyone who frequents freenode knows how much work he put into it all (usually in form of flurries of /notices). The PDPC board is still preparing a press release, so they haven't said much else, but it is clear that he will be missed.
