Okay, it seems someone needs to lay down some ground rules for student-developed software. If we all follow these simple rules, I think everyone can get along a little better.
1) If you do not plan to maintain the software (new versions, fixing bugs, etc) after the class is over, DO NOT RELEASE IT TO THE PUBLIC.
2) If this is the first project you are doing in a given language, system, or technology, DO NOT RELEASE IT TO THE PUBLIC.
3) If you are not going to provide up-to-date contact information, DO NOT RELEASE IT TO THE PUBLIC.
I realize that quite a few great pieces of technology have come from students, but the overwhelming majority ends up as forgotten abandonware. So to all students who dream to join the glamorous world of online software development, please be sure to follow these 3 rules. The world will thank you for it.
