So I finally got around to seeing the remake of Clash of the Titans last night. As a Classicist, I can't condone it as a good representation of anything even remotely heading towards a reflection of Greek mythology. As a filmgoer, I uh, actually rather enjoyed it.

I keep meaning to watch Avatar - maybe now it's out on DVD I'll get around to it. But yeah, Sam Worthington's very butch and manly in Clash of the Titans too, so I can see what you mean about the typecasting. I will guiltily admit I never even saw Transformers 1, so I can't comment on 2. I fail at watching any up to date films. Humbug.

300 really is very stylised. I mean it's almost like looking at graphic art in motion. My only advice is perhaps see the first ten minutes or so - you'll know straight away whether you can put up with it or not. I was pleasantly surprised that I could, given that I'd decided right from the start I was going to hate the film. Like I said, really don't count on there being any history in it though. It's an ok film. Not one I think I'd revisit of my own volition though.

I liked Alexander (I think I'm the only person on the planet who did) and I absolutely loathed Troy. I had real issues with that film because of what it did to Homeric characterisation; how completely they muffed up the whole story (10 year war in a week is a good example); some of the acting was dreadful; I ended up sort of wanting to punch Brad Pitt in the face by the end of it, and all of the above were bigger issues for me than they should have been, because the cast and crew had been so damn smug wittering on about how they'd based it so very closely on Homer, when they really, really hadn't. (Now you've started me off on a rant! XD)

Avatar was pretty good. Not the most original plot, but the colors were amazing (I didn't really care much for the 3D...there are a ton of 3D movies now). Lol...the first transformers was really good. And this is coming from someone who was never a big fan of Shia and had no prior knowledge of the series. But the second one was just a summer flick. And I knew that going in, but still didn't like it at all. I felt like it didn't add anything to the storyline of the first movie. I think there's supposed to be a 3rd one, and I feel like you can watch it without seeing the 2nd one and not be confused. That's how little plot there was :/

I like Alexander too, don't worry :)

Ah, see with Troy, it was different for me. I know a toooon about mythology (I love greek myths), but not so much the story of troy (the historical and mythological aspects of it), so it didn't get to me as much, I guess. Although I wanted more of Sean Bean ;) But I had the same mentality you had about Clash of the titans: it's just a movie that's there for pure entertainment, no matter how much the cast and the crew claim otherwise. But yes...Brad Pitt was never one of my fave actors, so I didn't really care one way or another with him. It was Sean Bean, Eric Bana, and Orlando Bloom (I was a little late in loving this guy, but now I adore him) for me.
