It's like I've oft said-everyone has a story to tell, and most of them, even the small ones, are surprisingly interesting. Each of us has our little dramas, and silly stories, and other little tidbits that comprise our lives, and it's fun to tap into some of that outside one's own circle of friends from time to time. I've met some really interesting people that way, and gotten inspiration for my own fiction from that process from time to time.

On the other hand, you're right. It is nice being able to tune in and out at will, and feeling no obligation to stick around :D
