Darfur: Person, place, or thing?

May 02, 2008 12:41

I walked over to pay my rent at the apartment office just now, wearing my Save Darfur shirt. The apartment manager looked at me and asked, "Who's Darfur?"

I honestly thought that at the very least everyone knew that it was a place and not a person. I was kind of taken aback by her question and just said, "It's a place," and then, when that got a blank stare, "It's a place in Africa." That seemed to satisfy her curiosity.

I forget that I am ordinarily and voluntarily surrounded by people who value education or are at least engaged in gaining some semblance of one and that not everyone else in the world is aware of what's going on outside of their personal lives or American pop culture or even wants to be aware of such.

That's kind of depressing.
