So I guess I never did update on the laptop/sound situation.

Here's the punchline:

The SoundBlaster I purchased was not hardware at all, it was software drivers for the on-board audio device.

Yeah. Dell sure knows their own products, eh?

I ended up getting a refund for it, I didn't pay for software that is available for free on Dell's site.
