Wondercon used to be a one-day drop-by kind of con for me. That's been gradually changing over the past few years and this year was non-stop.
Friday I got my badge and did a quick dealer's room wander, checked out the io9 meetup for a couple of minutes and then met up with
mettemu and Bryan at the Marriott. I got changed and headed over to the DNA Lounge for the Ball of Justice. Much fun and some drinking was had but we left at a reasonable hour.
Saturday there was a pre-Masquerade meeting and then I popped over to see
lady_leandra interview Tim Powers, which she did a beautiful job on. Afterwards it was time for a long-planned pilgrimage up to Fritz Leiber's old digs on Geary street. We told some fibs and got in to see the place, then we checked out where Dashiel Hammett lived on Post Street and then there was just enough time for lunch at
John's Grill before I had to get back to the Marriott and start the long Masquerade process.
The whole thing was quite an experience. Since I was really just a warm body for one of Bryan and Mette's costumes my main concern was not embarrassing myself, or them, onstage, which I more or less managed. I expected to get crazy nervous but somehow that didn't quite happen. The time on stage felt rushed and chaotic but we won best in show so I guess it wasn't that horrible. After a whole lot of photos we went back to the hotel and celebrated until around 5am.
Sunday I had planned on waking up at home, but instead they were kind enough to just let me crash in their room for a second night and so after packing and stowing our bags I got a little more time wandering the con and a quick lunch with
lady_leandra before heading off to the Victoria Theater for their The Last Unicorn screening. I got home at 11pm and was pretty certain I would be the walking dead today but I'm a little tired and sniffly but otherwise okay.
A full report to follow in the next issue of SF/SF, of course. Well, issue #104 that is.
Issue #103 is submitted and should be up on eFanzines in the next few days.
