Honestly, a lot of the technical things you can ignore. I really have no idea why vidders use certain programs and filters, but I just kind of bummed around until I found what they were talking about and I figured it out from there. I think that you will have no problems once you get started.
A lot of how you get started vidding is based in how you are getting your clips. If you are just downloading the episodes from a filesharing network or some other kind of digital format, you can start using the program VirtualDubMod (these are Wikipedia links, which have links to download the software if you are interested); The only thing else you will need is some sort of compression software like Divx. VirtualDubMod basically converts the episode into a usable file for your vid making software like Windows Movie Maker, Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere. The compression software makes the clip's file size fairly manageable. You compress the files when you are using the VirtualDubMod program.
If you are getting your episodes from dvds, you have to first start with a program like DVD Decrypter. You just pop your dvd into your computer's cd/dvd reader/burner and when the menu screen comes up choose DVD_Decrypter and then select "Main Movie Files." This program saves the episodes onto your computer and then you open VirtualDubMod to change the episodes into usable files. *This takes up a lot of file space.*
In the beginning, Vidding is a huge time commitment because clipping can take forever, but when you get to the making of vids, it is really fun.
This link Vidding for dummies is probably the most helpful when it comes to choosing filters and is a bit of a step by step guide to the technical aspects (Like how to compress a file, how to compress audio files, how to save the clips and what format).
Anyways, I have no doubt that you could figure out how to vid and if you do decide to vid, I am always happy to help.
