Absolutely, without question, an achievement is devalued any time it's "given" to someone who hasn't earned it.
Do you think honorary degree holders should use a title to indicate the possession of said degree?
I think it's arrogant to use a title when referring to yourself, even if you actually *earned* that title. The only time I can think of that it would be appropriate would be when signing a legally binding document.
Should honorary degrees be abolished altogether?
If someone in charge of an institution wants to devalue the achievement of a degree by giving it to people who haven't earned it, that's their choice. And it's my choice to ignore it.
