Flist! I really need your help. I am currently attempting to write a newspaper article about honorary degrees. In countries like the UK and the States it seems to be common knowledge that the possession of an honorary degree does not permit one to actually use the title "Dr." However, a number of Kenyan politicians and businessmen who have received honorary degrees DO use the title, which has caused a great deal of controversy, particularly as in some cases these honorary degrees were bought . Personally, I don't think that honorary degree holders have the right to place themselves on equal footing with people who have actually worked for years to earn the title. Here are a few questions, and I would love you to pieces if you answered them
1. What is your view of honorary degrees? Do you think the fact that utter scoundrels like Mugabe have been granted them totally devalues those who actually earned them (like Kofi Annan, for example)?
2. Do you think honorary degree holders should use a title to indicate the possession of said degree? Should it be a different title from those used by academics? Should they not use any title at all? Elaborate.
3. Should honorary degrees be abolished altogether?
4. Any additional comments.
Help me out people!
