The film that I’ve embedded below from YouTube is of an incident that took place on new year’s day in Oakland, California. Put simply, an unarmed man, Oscar Grant, (who happened to be black) is shot by police whilst being restrained on a train platform.
The incident was captured by a passenger in a train on the same platform. The video quality is a little poor, but it appears that initially three officers are restraining him face down on the floor. During the restraint, one stands up, un-holsters his gun and then fires into Oscar Grant’s back.
At the point that he does, bizarrely, the situation seems under control.
One officer has his knee on the back of the neck of the victim, (limiting movement) plus at least one other officer helping to restrain him. It’s questionable as to why the one or two officers, standing just a few feet from the incident, make no attempt to help deal with the situation before deadly force is used.
I think it’ll be interesting to see how this one plays out given that the US now has a black president.
