Saved from the dustbin of time by the great (and entirely free!) photo-recovery (from memory chip after deletion) tool of PhotoRec. Its companion tool also does general file recovery from many media. The interface is a bit old-fashioned, but it gets the job done. I ended up using the beta version, as the zip file for the stable version wasn't letting me download it correctly.
