Too wide??

May 08, 2010 19:44

So I made my first cloth pads this week to try on my period. I wore the first one today on one of the heaviest days, and when I went to change it, noticed something like this:

I make some pads that are 3 inches wide and they don't do that. The folding could be due to the thickness of the pad itself rather than the width. A way to test that would be to make one that is a bit thicker and see if that solves it.

Unless you wear underwear that is really wide in the crotch you could also try making it 1/4-1/2" less wide at the center and it might give you a better fit.

Hmm, I didn't think about thickness maybe having something to do with it. I think I'll try both making a thicker one and making one with a slightly smaller width and see if either of those works. Thanks!

It's too wide - the same thing happens to me with pads wider than 2.5" no matter how thick the pad is. The only 'problem' is that a lot of pads are 3" wide.

I second the too wide. This happened to mine when I made them wider than 2-2.5 inches. It doesn't matter how thickine are, but I get the bunching from width. I thought that wide would be good for a heavy flow pad, but I leaked because it bunched and didn't get to soak into the middle.

Yes, I also think it's too wide. I have two 3-inch pads that do the same thing. I always request the narrow size from pad makers if it's available; 2 1/4 inches would be ideal for me.

I say too wide as well. I can't use any wider than 2.5". Good luck!

As most have suggested....the pad is too wide. I make all my pads 2 or 2 1/4 wide and a little longer in the front. Its a bit of trial and error to find the right fit for yourself!

It might be more than it just being too wide. I've got a pad in mind that has the same problem, and it's not the widest pad I have. It is, however, the thickest, and I think that's why it bunches up like that. Remember that cloth is really absorbent, so you might not need to make them as thick as you have been. If you really do need the absorbency, maybe try using more absorbent but thinner materials, like bamboo or hemp fleeces and terries, if you haven't already tried that. Good luck!

Thanks for the info :) This specific pad had 3 layers of hemp fleece and a PUL layer for the absorbency, so maybe that's part of the problem as well. It was intended to be more of a heavy day pad, but maybe I don't need as many layers as I think I do.

That's really absorbent! A layer of PUL essentially doubles the absorbency because it forces your flow to spread out more, rather than bleeding through in one spot. So, for me, that would be a super-heavy night pad. Maybe experiment with pads with one or two layers of hemp fleece and a layer of PUL on a heavy day when you're at home so you can see if one of those would last you long enough to be out and about.
