Oh, see, whenever they do reports on acne, they just dig out those stock photos of "fat people." Because "fat people" all have acne, too, don'tchaknow. It's caused by the sin of fatness.
It's easier to find fat people than it is to find treadmills, which is part of hte problem, of course. And for what it's worth, a lot of the obese I know are so far in denial about their own condition that they don't even see themselves in the images. That's certainly the case for my MIL.
Also, turns out that completely different diets and food-culture have an effect! Millions American women nod in solemn agreement, "Thank you, science. My New Year's resolution was already hopeless!"
*flails* An author of the study injects his opinion that exercising more leads to eating more thus stagnant weight, which I guess was reported because it sounds nice to thin people. Because it doesn't look like the team looked at diet as a factor (according to the abstract). I'd also call into question a basic assumption of the study that African American genetics are directly comparable to Nigerian genetics. It's terrible science, and worse science reporting
( ... )
I always hate useless stock photos in general, of which these are a prime example. It's as if the journalists are saying "no one will read our article if it just has words in it, there must be pictures even when they contribute nothing at all to the story!"
But then, journalism is in a pretty sorry state these days anyway. I read the Seattle Times today, and found it really pathetic that almost every story was one I'd read verbatim on MSNBC yesterday -- it was all yesterday's recycled AP stories. And the newspaper industry wonders why circulation is plummeting?

Those clips drive me batshit. I always wonder what it is that makes heavy people so subhuman as to not deserve basic dignity.
Can you imagine a report on acne? With black bars over teenagers' eyes while they post closeups of their blotchy faces???
