I now know what an Amaranth flower is. I didn't before.
Clay and I went apple picking yesterday. I've never been before (and for a wonder, Clay, San Diego born and bred, hadn't either). It was fun! We bought five or six pounds of apples and pears for Clay to make an Apple Cobbler. I may try to use the pears in a pear-almond tart, or I may just eat `em.
The orchard was beautiful. They had a bunch of flowers growing near the office, and you could cut them for 40 cents a stem - that's where they had the amaranths.
Of course I had to buy one.
The word Amaranth is familiar to me because
bixxy used to publish a poetry journal by that name. Perhaps she had some secret meaning when she chose the name, based on the Amaranth's, ahem, appearance? Witness:
