Some authors can take you to a place even though they've never been there, Edgar Rice Burroughs and Tarzan for instance could take you to the Jungles of Africa and to the red plains of Mars even though he'd never been there. What the is the deal with writers who are going along just great and then suddenly. . . BOOM!?

They completely derail the story and it goes off the track and crashes in a pool of toxic waste upon which it warps and shrivels into a hideous puling mutant.
