So, I talked to Scott at UCDavis and he outlined the basic package. He reiterated that they don’t usually contact anyone this quickly, but I was one of their very top choices, so they wanted to get in touch right away.
They’re offering me 15,600$ a year garenteed for the first five years, renewable for the 6th. I would be TAing my first year, teaching writing classes in 2-3rd years and taching literature courses in my 4th-6th years. He also emphasized that I should let them know what other offers I receive, because they would “hate to lose me soley on the ground of funding.”
He was very sweet. He said, “Oh, by the way, if I reveal shocking ignorance of your field, I appologize. I’m actually the film guy.” We then chatted about Shakespeare in film and he told me about a silent film of Hamlet from the 1920’s in which Hamlet is played by a woman. Very interesting.
As we neared the end of the conversation, he asked, “Is there anything else that you’d like to know?” I then asked, “As a graduate student, would I have access to UCDavis’ 401(k) plan?” I could practically hear him blinking at the other end of the phone before he said, “You’re certainly the first person to ask me that. You know, I don’t know…. Why don’t you e-mail So-And-So . . .”
Overall, a very good chat. We shall see . . .
