Looking back at 2006, I’ve decided to select “Little Miss Sunshine” as my favorite movie of the year. It may not have been the best movie of the year, but it was definitely my favorite: I’ve always loved dark humor with some heartwarming affirmation at its dysfunctional core.
This movie has a Neitchze-reading teenager under a self-imposed vow of silence; a homely little girl going to a beauty pageant; a suicidal, gay, self-proclaimed “foremost authority on Proust;” a complete failure pushing his “Refuse to Loose: 9 Steps to Success;” a coke addict grandfather who yells about Nazi bullets in his tush if anyone trys to make him stop talking about sex; and, my favorite part, two sets of sibling-love which, sucker that I am for brother-sister bonding, brought tears to my eyes. The only part I didn’t love was the ending: it’s wasn’t quite spot-on, but the movie is great anyway.
Dark yet affirming; funny yet not stupid; wacky but not slapstick. Good for all occasions. Excellent movie.
So: what was YOUR favorite movie of 2006???
P.S. I was going to post the trailer from youtube, but honestly it spoils some of the best lines, so just trust me and go rent it.
