Reporting from a sugar coma

Remember the Wicked Pretty Things debacle? Of course you do. Jessica Verday has now decided what to do with the story she refused to straightwash: "I'm extremely grateful to be able to say that my short story 'Flesh Which Is Not Flesh' (Cameron and Wesley's story) is now available as an eBook on Amazon, and from now through August 31, 50% of the ( Read more... )

Is there any way to buy "Flesh Which Is Not Flesh" without owning a Kindle or downloading the Kindle program onto my computer, or do I have to suck it up and stop being a Luddite?

That's what I'm wondering too- I have no Kindle, but I must read. :/

I believe you have to download the Kindle program. I don't know of any other way to read a Kindle book other than to have a Kindle/use the program on your computer. Same as if it were the Nook from Barnes & Noble or any other e-reader. Short of it being a PDF you can pay for at another site, I think the program is required.

Maybe Calibre could convert it to epub (or another format)? I don't have a Kindle and haven't yet had a reason to try converting in or out of the Kindle format.

Maybe, but Amazon won't even let me buy the file without downloading some sort of Kindle program.

Ugh. Obviously I've been lucky in not having a Kindle Only book I've wanted yet.

There's a protection code on Kindle books and calibre (unless you have a different version or something I've never heard of) can't convert because of the protection code. You'd have to find the book without the code, but then you wouldn't be able to pay for it.

(I tried to convert a Kindle book for my Nook, so I'm speaking with experience about the protection code. I just gave up though, and read it on the Kindle computer program. Saved time and wasn't that bad. Well, the format wasn't bad, the book was atrocious)

Ah, good to know. I only recently downloaded Calibre because a book I wanted didn't come in PDF of RTF (I don't have an e-reader, I just read at my PC or laptop) and I needed to convert it. The organization of my mess of e-books was a bonus. Then I inherited an Eee which I could use as a bulky e-reader and find myself converting things out of RTF into ePub with it.

Turns out my computer is too outdated to run the Kindle program. Double-stuck.
