A dark gothico-technological atmosphere with strong reminiscences of Asimov "Robots" novels cycle takes us in a closed controlled world where a sudden disturbance - a "monster" - brings chaos and fear.
In this future world, people are subdued to massive messages to be "good citizens" and live with their personnal assistants in the guise of a faceless robot. Among the people, immigrants do their best to gain citizenship but are badly considered by the rest of the population. However, the appearance of a monster called Proxy brings havoc among the passive people, murdering random passers-by and spreading an unknown virus called "Cogito" that contaminates the robots. The authorities immediately destroy the infected ones and the only information about this virus is that it wakes a personality in the robots. Anyhow, when a robot becomes infected, it's rather impressive, though not in an usual way, those who watched some eps know what I'm talking about.
The main characters are Lil Mayeur (spelling differing from one team to another, some spelled her name "Real"), a favored spoiled young woman, and Vincent Law, an immigrant working his humble way to get citizenship in spite of his cowardly nature. But the strange and dangerous murderous monster called Proxy shatters their quiet lives by attacking them and then pursuing Vincent with no apparent reason. This lack of reason greatly disturb the authorities in their grand hidden plan and so Vincent becomes an outlaw, clueless about why a monster would want his skin and why the police believes him a muderer. In all this chaos, throw in a cute and mysterious infected robot-girl named Pino, who stood as a replacement child in a family until the mother was permitted to bear a child of her own, thus casting Pino in the shadow. The story of Pino, though classical in such robot plots, is all the more moving that Pino, programmed with the mind of an innocent child, appears totally oblivious of what's going on around her and keeps a cheerful front. However, she witnesses one of Proxy appearances and becomes infected. Her path then becomes a fateful one attached to the steps of Vincent who she innocently helps, unless she's driven by... ?
However, don't think this is all so serious and dead too angsty. Of course it is, but there are moments when you get into some strange relaxed atmosphere, that reminded me of Cow Boy Bebop in that it's so disconnected from the rest, it's down-to-earth matters and means to survive, always keeping a funny dignified manner... well get to eps 4-5 and you'll understand what I mean ^^
So that's it for the plot. I really really love Lil's design! She's gorgeous and I love her gothic look with blue eye-makeup and dark outfit. Of course, she's a spoiled brat, but not in the capricious way of being a brat. She knows what she wants and will try her best to achieve her goals. On another hand, Vincent is really the undecided clueless character that you want to shake out of his angst. He does react when his life is in line, but that's pretty much all. He looks like a polished chinese man (or asian) with slanting eyes. His pupils though are strangely light green. Is it related to his origins or a part of a secret explaining why Proxy is after him? Also very polished is his hair, always net, a reflection of his meekness... until he really gets into trouble and it seems like a part of him, indignant and rebellious comes out and his hair all fly around in disorder... but he looks really cool at those (rare) moments.
A little note about Proxy: his design is really awesome, even though I find it scary (I'm easily impressed, pardon me ^^;; ). But in spite of that, I'm looking forward to seeing more of him because I want to learn more about him!!!!
On the whole, the graphic atmosphere strongly reminded me of Witch Hunter Robin because of the dull colors and clear lines in the chara design. Maybe that's one of the reason I like this series so much!
And what contributes even more to the atmosphere is the music, of course. The OP and ED are awesome in that they really stick to the series, plot and graphism. Performed by MONORAL and RADIOHEAD, they're pop-rock songs and in a sense, really catching.
