My refrigerator broke, but that's all good. Why?
Today was my first day working for the industry.
Didn't have much of a breakfast as my milk spoiled for the second time this weekend, but ate my last breakfast bar. I put on Around 8:20am I headed out to the office with an uneventful drive. Traffic wasn't that much to deal with, so I got there around 8:45am. Luckily I was walking to the office as another coworker was heading in.
I spent the first 30 minutes introducing myself to everyone walking in. No one knew which desk was mine, so I hovered over a mostly empty desk without a chair or keyboard. That desk was to be my desk and a search for a chair and keyboard was launched with success. My standard issue is a Dell XPS 410. After checking Windows Updates and getting my standard issue of Firefox extensions,
Synergy got me working between the Dell and my Mac and went on from there.
Kevin (my boss) came in but didn't say too much, but referred me to Doug for various IT stuff including my e-mail address. And I got both the standard first initial/last name address, Doug also set me up with an alias of 'seg' at telltale games dot com.
For lunch, a bunch of us went to a pizza place across the street from the office. It wasn't the whole office, but a few of the art people on the other end of the office were there so I had some time to talk to them. Not to mention Dave Grossman and a few others.
When I got back, I sat in my first meeting with all the programmers. Most of the meeting I sat back and listened, but didn't have much to contribute. Did get a good idea at what's going on with the company and how I'm going to be fitting into the projects. Actually, I'll be involved in every project as all builds funnel to me. This is both daunting and completely awesome. At the end Kevin introduced me officially to the group and went the group introduced themselves.
After the meeting, Charles got me started with a clearer direction and start working on actual build work. It took a few trial and errors, but I got Telltale Tool working on my work computer. The Tool is the in-house game engine for all of the games Telltale makes. There were a few dependencies I had to work out and by the end of the day I had the tool running, but couldn't run the Sam & Max games due to a known issue. Tomorrow I switch gears to the Bone games.
Today and for the rest of the week, I'll be looking at all this as a huge blur; Taking in the scenery and letting things soak into my head. I'd like to take charge, kick some ass, and take down names, but there's too much specialized tools for me to be too proactive about things. There are a few guides and things I've been pouring over, but there's a lot of individual training needed. Since there are two deadlines this week, the staff is respectfully ignoring me (stressing the respect part). They are friendly and will help me out, but they have to hit target first. As the week goes on, I'll have more and more attention.
I have some more insularly stuff behind the next cut, but there's something I want to say to all of you:
Thank you.
Each of my friends and family have played some part in making today happen. From the big things like helping me move, helping to pay for my education, or just the positive encouragement through the years, every little bit helped me get here. I earned this, but it would not be possible without support from viewers like you.
As far as the whole apartment thing...
After work, I visited Comcast personally to figure out the whole service thing. The guy on-line said that my apartment didn't exist in their computers and I had to make an appointment. When I got to Comcast, the lady there understood the situation, but the guy I chatted with signed me up for three ports in my room and did it such an ass-backwards way that she had to start the account from the top. She offered to have a tech come by tomorrow between 3 and 5, but that's right when the movers come in. So I'm set for next Monday to get cable TV, then I go to the Comcast office to pick up the internet self kit.
So this morning I confirmed that my refrigerator is broken. The freezer makes ice, and the fridge part runs, but the cold isn't getting to the the food causing everything to spoil. Called my landlord this afternoon but haven't heard from him yet. I'll call again tomorrow.
