Think inside the box first. Then go outside.

Yeah, the places Nico and I were going to go? All that talk about checking email and watching videos and talking to friends...yeah, none of that happened. Want to know why?

The wireless connection isn't working.

I figure, maybe I need to just find the signal. I'll just place my computer next to the family computer and it will pop up. Yeah, it doesn't. I check the router and all the lights are on. I make sure everything's connected properly. It is. The modem lights are blinking like they usually do. I try again. No signal. A message pops up on the fam compu saying "Router not connected". I check all the wires again. I talk sternly to the message. "Um, hello? Yes it is." I take out all the plugs and plug them in again. I try for wireless. Nope. Nothing. Fine, you wanna play rough with me Sony?

I run upstairs and grab the Linksys Router disc. I'll just load the router program back on the computer and we'll start from scratch. I head back downstairs and put on the CDROM. I begin the steps to connect the router. Step 1: Find Internet. I press the button. A minute later it beeps at me. "Internet connection not found." Whatever. I press the button again. Same message after a minute. I check the cables again. Yup, still plugged in correctly. I press the button again, like it's going to magically find the internet connection now.

Yeah, it still doesn't. I try putting the modem cable directly into the computer and that doesn't seem to help Linksys find the connection either, though I am able to go online anyway. This whole thing isn't making sense to me. I try connecting things a few possible ways. The internet is working beautifully but for some odd reason, the computer is trying to trick me into thinking the internet is not connected while I'm on the internet. After an hour of trying to coax it into working and using every curse known to man five thousand times under my breath, I decide to tell dad. Because dads know how to fix everything.

Dad tries the same things I tried and then some. Nothing is working. He doesn't understand it either. I finally throw in the towel, saying I'll figure it out tomorrow. Maybe call Cameron or Knobbs and explain the situation to them. Dad keeps plugging away, trying to get to the bottom of it as I take my shower and call it a night.

Today I lug Nico to work and take my place in the kitchen, ready to steal the internet connection from some guy in the building. I find the wireless connection to be missing again. No way. I know there’s more than one I can steal. What’s going on? ‘Oh no,’ I think horrified, ‘Nico’s sick again!’ I quickly set to work, trying different internet options and advanced set-ups for 30 minutes. I exhaust every option and realize I’ll just have to give up. Maybe on my lunch hour I’ll go to Best Buy and harass them to make it function.

I begin my work, typing diligently. I switch the paper I’m copying to the right side of the monitor to see better. I notice there’s a wireless connection icon by the right side of the screen.

I take a closer look at it.

It’s not just an icon...it’s a button. So I press it.

I now have the internet.

i think my computer is a person
