"Fifth Avenue Surgery Center."
"Hi Kate!"
"Hi Moma!"
"Just so you know," she begins and I can hear her smiling, "Best Buy called and Nico's ready."
My voice raises about five octaves. "For real?!" There's a small happy pause as I realize it's for reals. "Yay!"
This is such wonderful news! After preparing to let him go for three days and then re-preparing myself for the three weeks, he comes home early! I made it through 12 days! Sure, I hardly wrote anything, didn't check my email, and talked to no one online in those 12 days, but I made it through! Go me!
So dad pulls up to Best Buy and I eagerly leap out of the car before it comes to a complete stop. I walk as fast as I can towards the Geek Squad without looking suspicious or like a loser. Hard, I know. I get to the counter and wait patiently, trying to hide the fact I'm grinning like a fool. The person who helps me is someone that went to middle school with my sister. He inquires about her so I tell the basics: lawyer in White Plains, living with Golf Pro husband in Bronxville, expecting, likes pickles, pets my invisible dog. I forget to ask him his name because he brings out Nico and everything fades away. His voice and background noises disappear and all I see is my laptop in his hands. He places it front of me gently and I run my hand over the top and whisper his name. "You can turn it on," he says. I look up at him with wide eyes, "Of course," I breathe out. I do every night *wink wink*.
HP has given me a whole new beautiful screen. I am very grateful. If Nico gets another line, I hope it happens within in the next two years so I don't have to pay the ridiculous amount it costs to replace screens. Free is good with my salary. Thank you mom and dad for the warranty!
I shut him down and carry him away towards my dad, who is surveying the plasma TVs. I am so excited to get Nico home and put him back where he belongs. We’ll check my email. We’ll talk to people in Colorado. We’ll play lots and lots of Clack. Oh, the places we will go!
