Summary: By the time Gwaine is 17, Uther Pendragon has destroyed both his family's financial stability and his burgeoning relationship with Arthur. So Gwaine leaves England and lives all over the world for the next eleven years, until he gets a call from his sister that their father is dying. Gwaine returns to make amends for his abrupt absence, but he doesn't want anything to do with Arthur, despite his family and friends speaking highly of him. Eventually Gwaine and Arthur have to interact. Can Gwaine accept the man Arthur has become? Or will he let bitterness take over his heart? Modern AU.
Arthur/Gwaine long fic! Those are rare. The summary intrigued me so I thought I'd try reading it and I wasn't disappointed. I thought I would initially find it difficult to finish, me being more of an M/A reader, but the writing was so engaging and it had some of my favourite tropes: grief/mourning, ex-lovers, world travels. The grief/mourning hit me in the gut and seeing Gwaine try to make good with his father had me crying! Arthur is honourable and has a big heart like in canon, and it really warmed me to see the both of them start to know each other again after eleven years of being apart. BFF!Merlin plays a big part too, and that made me smile. A refreshing and great read.
